Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about QEEG Brain Mapping and Home Neurofeedback Training.
We want you to feel fully informed and comfortable as you begin your brain training journey. Below are answers to the questions we hear most frequently from clients and families.
No. Neurofeedback is a completely drug-free, non-invasive process. It does not require any medications. Over time, as your brain learns to self-regulate, many clients find they can work with their prescribing doctor to safely reduce or eliminate existing medications.
Not at all. The entire process is completely painless and non-invasive. When we perform a brain map, we are simply recording the natural electrical patterns your brain already produces. There are no currents, shocks, or electrical inputs sent into your brain. You sit in a comfortable chair while passive sensors record your brainwaves for a few minutes with eyes open and eyes closed.
While the science of neurofeedback has existed since the late 1950s, early equipment was complex and confined to research laboratories. Recent advancements in computing power and digital signal processing have finally made it accessible, allowing practitioners to offer this sophisticated training in standard clinic and home settings.
Your brain communicates using electrical pulses categorized into four primary frequencies: Beta (focused, awake), Alpha (relaxed, reflective), Theta (dreamy, pre-sleep), and Delta (deep sleep). Ideally, your brain shifts between these states naturally. When certain networks produce the wrong frequency at the wrong time (such as excessive Theta while trying to study), cognitive or emotional struggles can occur.
Most home or clinic training sessions last approximately 30 minutes of active training time, making them easy to fit into a daily routine.
During a session, passive sensors on your scalp read your brainwaves. You wear specialized light-emitting glasses and headphones while watching a movie or listening to music. When your brainwave patterns align with healthy ranges, the video plays brightly and the audio is clear. If your brainwaves drift, the screen dims and the volume drops. This real-time visual and auditory feedback guides your brain toward healthier self-regulation.
Because neurofeedback is a learning process, response times vary. Some clients report noticing improvements within a few sessions, while more chronic patterns may require 20 to 30 sessions. Just like learning a physical skill, consistency and repetition are key to building stable, long-lasting neural pathways.
Yes. Long-term studies show that once the brain learns how to sustain these new, balanced patterns, the improvements hold. Research on executive function and epilepsy has shown that the self-regulation skills learned during training persist years after the sessions are completed.
Yes, you can absolutely begin your training program while taking your current medications. As your brain function becomes more efficient, you should coordinate with your physician to monitor your progress and make any adjustments to your dosages.
Neurofeedback is safe, but because it is an active training process, some clients may occasionally experience temporary fatigue, mild headaches, or slight irritability after a session—similar to the feeling after a study session or workout. We customize each protocol and monitor your progress closely to minimize any discomfort.
Yes, extensive research shows that individuals with ADHD often exhibit excessive slow-wave (Theta) activity in the frontal regions. Neurofeedback specifically trains these areas to produce faster Beta waves, improving focus, reducing impulsivity, and enhancing executive function without the side effects of stimulants.
Neurofeedback is supported by decades of peer-reviewed clinical research. There are thousands of published studies evaluating its efficacy for attention deficits, sleep issues, anxiety, and performance enhancement. Organizations like the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research (ISNR) maintain exhaustive databases of these findings.
Understanding the Process
Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive process that helps your brain learn to regulate itself. By measuring brainwave activity in real-time, it teaches your brainwaves to find healthier, more balanced patterns.
